The length of time that women and their children (if they have any) stay in refuge is generally determind by how long it takes for them to access their own tenency. This can vary from person to person but as an average we would estimate 3-6 months. During this time women and children can build up relationships with the workers in refuge. The role of Follow- On workers was developed in recognition of this.
Follow-on workers will first make contact with women and their children (if they have any) whilst they are in refuge. When the family access their own tenancy the Follow- On worker will continue to visit and offer practical and emotional support. This support would generally last for up to six months.
